The first thing to check when an outlet goes dead
A dead outlet with the breaker still on is almost always downstream of a tripped GFCI somewhere else in the house. GFCI receptacles protect not only themselves but everything wired past them, and builders routinely put the protecting device in a place nobody associates with the room that lost power — a garage wall, an exterior receptacle behind a shrub, a bathroom on the other side of the house, or a crawlspace outlet.
So before anything else: walk the house and press the reset button on every GFCI you can find, including the garage, all bathrooms, the kitchen counters, the exterior, and any basement or crawlspace outlet. In Seymour homes off Chapman Highway and out toward Boyds Creek, the garage GFCI is the culprit remarkably often, especially after a wet week when an outdoor receptacle has taken on moisture.
If a GFCI resets and stays reset, you're done. If it trips immediately or won't reset at all, something on that circuit is faulting and it's worth finding out what.

Why a GFCI keeps tripping
A GFCI measures the current going out on the hot conductor against what comes back on the neutral. When those don't match by more than about five milliamps, it assumes the difference is leaking somewhere it shouldn't — through water, damaged insulation, or a person — and shuts off in a fraction of a second. That sensitivity is exactly why it saves lives, and it's also why nuisance trips happen.
The common real causes: moisture in an exterior receptacle or a box in a damp crawlspace, which is extremely common in this area after storms; a specific appliance with a failing motor or heating element, often a freezer, dehumidifier, pressure washer, or an old fridge in the garage; damaged cable somewhere in the run, sometimes from a nail or a rodent; or simply an old GFCI at the end of its life, since these devices do wear out and most manufacturers consider ten years a reasonable service life.
You can narrow it down yourself. Unplug everything on the circuit and reset. If it holds, plug items back one at a time and wait — the offender usually announces itself within a few minutes. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring and needs a meter, not guesswork.
Warm, buzzing, or scorched outlets are a different conversation
A dead outlet is an inconvenience. A warm one is a warning. Receptacles should be at ambient room temperature; noticeable heat means resistance somewhere in the connection, and resistance in a live connection generates heat that gets worse over time. That's the mechanism behind most receptacle fires.
Causes we find most often: backstabbed connections, where the wire was pushed into a spring-clip hole on the back of the device instead of wrapped under the screw terminal. Those clips lose tension over decades and are the single most common source of loose, hot connections in houses built from the seventies onward. Also: a device with worn contacts that no longer grip a plug tightly, an over-loaded circuit, or aluminum branch wiring terminated on a device not rated for it.
If you have a warm outlet, a plug that falls out, buzzing, or any browning or melting on the face, turn off the breaker for that circuit and leave it off until it's been looked at. That's not being dramatic — it's the one electrical symptom where waiting a week genuinely carries risk.
What Seymour's housing mix means for outlet work
Seymour has a wide spread of housing ages, and the outlet issues track with it. Homes built before the mid-sixties often have ungrounded two-prong receptacles. You cannot fix that by swapping in a three-prong device — that just puts a grounding-type outlet on an ungrounded circuit and makes it look safe when it isn't. The legitimate options are running a proper ground, or protecting the circuit with a GFCI and labeling the outlets 'No Equipment Ground' as code allows.
Homes from the seventies and eighties are where backstabbed devices and aging aluminum branch circuits show up. Newer construction out toward the Sevierville line generally has good bones, and the calls there are more about adding capacity — outlets in the garage, on the deck, in a shop, or USB-C receptacles in the bedrooms and kitchen.
Kitchens and baths in any age of home come with their own requirement set: countertop receptacles need GFCI protection and specific spacing, and bathroom receptacles need a dedicated 20-amp circuit. Renovations that skipped those steps are common in flipped houses.
Adding outlets rather than adding extension cords
The most useful outlet work we do isn't repair, it's addition. If a room is running on power strips and cords under rugs, adding two or three properly placed receptacles costs less than most people assume and removes a genuine fire risk.
