Why old Knoxville houses run out of outlets
Walk through a house in Fourth and Gill, Old North Knoxville, Island Home, or Lonsdale and count the receptacles in a bedroom. You'll often find two, sometimes one. That was generous when the room held a lamp and a clock radio. Now the same room has a TV, a couple of chargers, a laptop, a fan, a space heater in winter, and a lamp — and it's all coming through a power strip fed by a single ungrounded outlet behind the bed.
The result is the thing we most want to eliminate: extension cords under rugs, daisy-chained power strips, and cords pinched behind furniture. Extension cords aren't rated for permanent use, and cords under rugs get walked on until the insulation fails. Adding real receptacles isn't a luxury upgrade — it's the cheapest safety improvement available in an old house.
Getting wire through plaster, lath, and balloon framing
Older Knoxville homes bring three complications that newer drywall construction doesn't. Plaster over wood lath is brittle and doesn't cut like drywall, so cut-in boxes need to be done carefully with the right tools to avoid cracking a wall section loose. Balloon framing in pre-1940 homes means wall cavities can run continuously from the basement to the attic, which is actually helpful — it makes fishing wire vertically much easier than in modern platform framing with fire blocking every floor.
Fire blocking, when present, is the main obstacle, along with insulation that's been blown into cavities after the fact. Blown cellulose turns an easy fish into a slow one.
The strategy that keeps damage down is to work from the unfinished spaces. Most older Knoxville homes have a basement or crawlspace and an accessible attic, and if the new outlet can be fed from below or above, the only hole in the finished wall is the one the box goes in. When a run genuinely has to cross a finished wall horizontally, we'll discuss the options — a small access hole that gets patched, a baseboard route, or relocating the outlet a few feet to a spot that's easier to reach.

The grounding question in pre-1960s wiring
Many older Knoxville circuits are two-wire without an equipment ground. Any new receptacle you add has to be handled correctly, and there are three legitimate approaches depending on the situation.
The best answer is a new home run: pull a modern grounded circuit from the panel to the room. It gives you a proper ground, added capacity, and a circuit that isn't shared with half the house. It costs more but it's the fix rather than a workaround. The second option, where extending an existing ungrounded circuit is unavoidable, is protecting it with a GFCI and labeling the receptacles 'GFCI Protected — No Equipment Ground,' which code specifically allows. The third is running a separate equipment grounding conductor back to the panel or another approved point, which is sometimes practical in an accessible basement.
What is never acceptable is a bootleg ground — jumping the neutral to the ground screw on the receptacle. It makes a tester show a properly grounded outlet while creating a real shock hazard on the device chassis. We find these in flipped houses more often than we'd like, and correcting them is part of the work.
Knob-and-tube, and knowing when to stop adding
A share of Knoxville's oldest houses still have knob-and-tube wiring in some circuits, usually mixed with later updates. K&T isn't automatically an emergency if it's undisturbed, uninsulated, and in good condition — but you cannot extend it, you cannot bury it in insulation, and it has no ground. If we open a wall and find live K&T feeding the area where you want new outlets, the honest recommendation is to replace that circuit rather than tie into it.
The same goes for cloth-insulated early Romex where the insulation crumbles when handled. At that point, a partial rewire of the affected circuits is both safer and, over the life of the house, cheaper than repeated service calls chasing failures.
Panel capacity and what a modern room needs
Before adding much of anything, we look at the panel. Many older Knoxville homes are on 100-amp service with a panel that's full, and adding circuits means tandem breakers if the panel accepts them, a subpanel, or a service upgrade. If you're also considering a heat pump, an EV charger, or a kitchen remodel, it's worth sizing the solution once instead of three times.
For the rooms themselves, the current code baseline is a receptacle within six feet of any point along a wall, which in practice means no point is more than six feet from a plug. Kitchens require GFCI-protected countertop receptacles at specific spacing plus dedicated small-appliance circuits. Bathrooms need a dedicated 20-amp GFCI circuit. Most bedrooms and living areas today need AFCI protection. We bring new work up to those standards even when the rest of the house predates them.
Where new outlets pay off most
The highest-value additions we do in older Knoxville homes, in rough order: behind and beside beds so nightstands stop running on cords; at the desk or workspace, ideally with USB-C built in; kitchen counters where there's currently one outlet for the whole run; the garage or basement workshop, on a dedicated circuit if power tools are involved; exterior receptacles on the front and back for holiday lighting, pressure washers, and yard tools; and porches and decks with in-use weather covers.
