A hallway or stairwell light controlled from two locations is a three-way circuit; three locations makes it four-way. These are where smart switch projects get complicated, because the traveler conductors between switch locations behave differently than a simple switch loop.

Different smart brands solve this differently. Some use a smart primary switch plus a proprietary companion switch that replaces the second location and communicates over the traveler. Some use two full smart switches paired wirelessly. Some let you leave the second location as a standard switch as long as it stays in one position. Mixing brands rarely works, and buying two identical smart switches for a three-way without checking the brand's approach is a common way to end up returning hardware.
