Do you need 150 or 200 amps?

For most homes the honest answer is 200 amps. The material cost difference between 150 and 200 amps at the time of installation is modest, and 200-amp service comfortably carries a heat pump, an electric range, a dryer, a water heater, a hot tub, and a Level 2 EV charger with capacity left over. If there is any chance you add an EV, a shop, or a second HVAC system in the next decade, 200 amps is the cheaper decision.

There are exceptions. A small home with gas heat, gas water heating, and no EV plans may be perfectly served by 150 amps. Some properties have utility or physical constraints that make 200 amps impractical. And occasionally the right answer is no upgrade at all — a sub-panel, a load management device, or simply repairing one bad circuit solves the problem for a fraction of the cost. We would rather tell you that than sell you a panel you don't need.

Not every capacity problem needs a service upgrade. When your main service has headroom but the panel is out of physical slots, a properly sized sub-panel is often the cleaner and less expensive fix — especially for a finished basement, a garage conversion, an addition, or a detached shop.
